By EU standards, this was an achievement – 20 months earlier, the term “Indo-Pacific region” was not even used in official paperwork in both the EU or its member states. One exception was France, which had developed its own strategy in and had been pushing ever since for the adoption of an EU-level equivalent. With regard to its overseas territories in the area, France is the only European nation that sees itself as a “resident power” in the Indo-Pacific. Australian and European approaches to China and the United States are also more likely to diverge at occasions.
