Though not as well-known as George Boldt’s Castle, Singer Castle on Dark Island is privately renovated and is open to tourists. Frederick Bourne had his fort constructed with secret passageways and hidden wine cellars so he may spy on his visitors whereas preserving his liquor out of sight during the prohibition era. Among the lavish homes built during this time have been a number of masonry “castles”, some of which stay as international landmarks.
